\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 While all of us, once in a while have overlooked the importance of caring for our jewellery and used it roughly ; it is very imperative to avoid doing so, if we want our jewellery to last a lifetime. Although jewellery will not really tarnish too much immediately, at some point of time, you will start to notice that its dull and not as vibrant as the first time you wore it. .<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Soaps and other cleaning compounds tend to build up as residue over the metal, specially within the small details of your precious metals and in between the stones. This is difficult to clean and over time could corrode some types of jewelllery metals. Moisture and chemicals also trapped within could cause discomfort, skin irritations and discolouration of your jewellery and your skin. <\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0There is also the potential of your jewelllery getting snapped while scrubbing or getting trapped and broken in your towel, while drying off. Keeping jewellery safe from being lost in the tub or going down the drain is also a significant reason to remove all your jewellery before bathing.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Cosmetic chemicals could also be another cause for your jewelllery to tarnish over time. Its no secret, that most beauty products these days are loaded with harmful chemical compounds. Although we may not know which could and which may not harm us and our jewellery, it is a good practice not too let them mingle too closely, for optimum jewellery care.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Cosmetics often contain chemical compounds. When these compounds rub against the metals of the jewellery, they cause a fine dust due to the abrasion, which can enter the fine pores of the skin; and cause blackening of the jewellery and your skin.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0It would be good practice to remove all jewellery , specially rings; before applying makeup and other cosmetics. Clean well, the areas that will be in contact with your jewellery with soap and water before wearing your jewellery. In the case of necklaces and bracelets, please do see that the cosmetics worn, like creams, makeup, deodorants, perfumes etc are well dried after their application, before wearing your pretty jewels. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0At the ocean, care should be taken not to let your jewellery touch the salted water or the sand on the beach. Sand acts like a sandpaper being rubbed against your jewellery all the time that your are there. The salt in the water and the air could ruin your jewellery, as it reacts with all the metals in it. <\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Also, tanning lotions contain chemicals , and that along with the salt water, your sweat and the rays of the sun; is a potential hazard that will ruin your jewellery for good. Sun tan lotions can also coat the jewellery and the stones on it, causing it to lose its reflective ability , making it dull, lifeless and unappealing. In case of stones that are coloured, it is advisable to avoid them in high temperatures and very bright sunlight; as it could dull its hue over time. As most stones are treated these days, it is advisable to protect them further.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0It is good practice to keep jewellery away from most household chemicals. Detergents, soaps, wax, polish etc could build up over rings causing your hands to develop skin. It is a well known fact that silver jewellery if used while working with photographic chemicals and solutions; causes the skin to blacken.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Chemicals in the household used to clean floors and other hygiene areas; should be avoided from coming in contact with your jewellery. Jewellery must also be removed while using any household bleaching agents like chlorine etc.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Jewellery should also be protected from knocks and blows to it, as it could dislodge the setting and even chip a stone, no matter how hard the stone is. Preferably do not subject your jewellery to sudden changes of temperature too.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Spas, saunas and other places for various beauty treatments could be potential hazards to your jewellery. It is highly advisable to remove all jewellery while going for such beauty treatments. Oil massages, heat treatments etc, could damage your jewels making them dull and lifeless . <\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Jewellery care is a delicate process. If you look after your jewels well, they will last you a lifetime, giving you the same pleasure you had when you wore them for the very first time. <\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Your jewels are unique, precious and endearing. Just like you are. Treat them well !!!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Storing & looking after jewellery<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Jewellery should be carefully stored. Care should be taken to protect it from knocks, chemicals, extreme temperatures & sunlight. When treated with respect your jewellery will look fabulous and last for many years. Here some tips for storage and cleaning:<\/p>\n

Store all jewellery in a clean, dry place away from direct sun exposure and other atmospheric elements. Do not store jewellery next to radiators, windowsills or in rooms with excess condensation, such as bathrooms or wet rooms. Damp and hot conditions can cause precious metals to discolour, tarnish and erode as well as damage gemstones. Silver in particular is susceptible to tarnishing; storing silver jewellery in individual, air-tight plastic bags can help reduce or prevent the effects of this.<\/p>\n

Keep all jewellery in separate pouches, boxes or bags to prevent pieces rubbing and scratching against one another.
Store all beaded necklaces flat to prevent the thread or string stretching and becoming weak.<\/p>\n

Skin and hair products such as body lotions, perfumes and creams can react adversely with jewellery causing precious metals to tarnish and\/or erode. It is advisable to apply any cosmetic products in advance of putting on jewellery.<\/p>\n

In order to minimise the chance of damage from knocks, scratches or sharp blows, it is advisable to remove all jewellery when partaking in any physical or labour intensive activities. For this same reason, it is also advisable not to wear jewellery when asleep at night.
Jewellery should not be worn in the shower or bath, or when bathing in a hot tub, pool or in the sea. Chemicals such as chlorine can damage, discolour or erode precious metals and gemstones.<\/p>\n

Cleaning jewellery<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Check jewellery regularly for signs of dirt, wear and tear.<\/p>\n

Do not use abrasive cleaners on jewellery.<\/p>\n

Gently rub gold or silver jewellery with a dry, clean, lint-free and soft cloth to maximise the metals\u2019 lustre and shine. Do not press hard when polishing gold-filled or gold-plated jewellery as this may cause damage to the surface of the piece. Do not use rough paper towels or rough paper tissues to clean precious metals as they may also scratch the surface of the metal.<\/p>\n

After each wear, it is recommended to wipe jewellery clean with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to remove any make-up or natural skin oils.<\/p>\n

Take extra care when cleaning jewellery containing gemstones or pearls as they are fragile and susceptible to damage.<\/p>\n

Gold and gold-plated jewellery may be cleaned with warm soapy water and a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. Pieces must be rinsed thoroughly and dried well after cleaning.<\/p>\n

Silver jewellery may be polished using a specialist silver polish. It is advisable to consult a professional for advice on which product to use, and how best to use it, as commercial silver polishes can damage certain gem stones, such as pearls, lapis lazuli and turquoise.<\/p>\n
